NCC/MTN Locked In Meetings On Fine

South African mobile network giant, MTN, is yet to pay up the 1.04 trillion naira (5.2billion dollars) fine imposed on it by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) following its failure to disconnect over 5 million unregistered subscribers from its network. The Nation gathered in Abuja on Friday that MTN and top officials of the government and NCC are locked in series of meetings on the issue. It was learnt that no conclusion has been reached on the matter, except for the grace granted MTN to negotiate payment of the fine within the next few days. The NCC had previously set a deadline of November 16 for the settlement of the penalty, but MTN managed to secure an extention of the deadline after series of meetings. When contacted on updates on the issue, the Deputy Director, Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Mr Sony Araba confirmed that meetingsare ongoing on the matter since Tuesday, but that no money has been paid yet. He declined to comment on the conclusions reached at the meeting, saying whatever conclusion had been reached would soon be made public.
