The 20,000 costumes designed with obsessive attention to historic detail


It has been dubbed 'the most expensive series ever made', with the first ten episodes costing £100 million. 


They trace the Queen's life during the Fifties, through her marriage to Philip (played by Doctor Who actor Matt Smith) and the death of her father. The series, on screens now through Netflix, has won critical acclaim for its realistic script - but it is the characters' wardrobes that have captivated many female viewers. Each episode is a parade of sumptuous costumes, many of them painstaking re-creations of garments worn by the Royal Family. And 56-year-old Michele Clapton, a costume designer from Oxfordshire, was responsible for every one.
