Eight Things about birth control implants every woman MUST know

A birth control implant is a small device inserted underneath the skin of a woman’s upper arm by a doctor. Just like most forms of birth control, the implant releases hormones into a woman’s body which would prevent pregnancy.

The implant works either by preventing sperm from getting into the eggs to fertilize them by making the cervical mucus thicker and impermeable or by keeping eggs in the ovaries so they can’t meet with sperm.

Here are 8 things you should know about birth control implant:

It can prevent pregnancy for up to four years.

It is a very effective form of birth control. Only 1 out of 100 women would get pregnant while using an implant.

If a woman gets pregnant with the implant in place, it does not increase her chance of having pregnancy complications.

It does not prevent future pregnancy. If a woman decides she wants to get pregnant afterwards, the implant can be removed and she is able to get pregnant quickly after its removal.

It is a generally safe procedure and most women can use it.

It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

It can be used while breastfeeding.

It can cause a change in period. Period may become lighter or heavier, frequent or infrequent. Serious symptoms rarely occur.
