First Nigerian Woman To Be On A Naira Note


Ladi Dosei Kwali was the pioneer of modern pottery in Nigeria. She was born in 1925 in the Gwari region of Northern Nigeria where she learned to make pottery as a child.

Her pottery work were known for their beauty of form and decoration and were purchased by many famous people of that time.
In 1954, she joined Cardew’s pottery training centre in Abuja as the only woman potter, and through her contact with the centre her pottery work became celebrated in Europe, Britain and America and were shown in at the Berkeley Gardens in London. She was known as Nigeria’s best-known potter and in 1963 she was awarded a doctorate and was made MBE .
Her portrait appears on the Nigerian 20 Naira note, making her the first Nigerian woman to be on a currency.
