Inmate Walks Out Of Open Prison To Enjoy A Night With His Wife In Boutique Hotel

Douglas Ward, 26, walked out of the notorious North Sea Camp open prison and checked into the Grade II-listed Cley Hall Hotel, in Spalding, Lincolnshire (bottom right), with his wife Eileen, 27 (together left). Ward, who was serving a 64-month sentence for possession of firearms at the time, brazenly absconded the Category D prison over the August bank holiday weekend. A court heard he was rumbled when a member of staff at the 15-bedroom boutique hotel became suspicious and checked his Facebook page, which listed him as a 'serving prisoner'. He had posted pictures of himself and his wife (centre and top right) consuming the contents of the minibar, which prompted online friends to ask if he had been released from jail. He responded by bragging that he was simply 'out for the day'. The court heard how Ward's wife was described by the hotel manager as having an 'orange complexion as if she used fake tan and what he took to be very large breast implants'. She was not charged over the incident but her husband was handed a 15-month sentence - to run concurrently with his firearms sentence.
