Picture of mother breastfeeding on graduation day

Jacci Sharkey was photographed as she breastfed her six-week-old son Alek after she was handed her degree in human resource management. The picture was posted on her university's Facebook page and it has received more than 194,000 likes and almost 6,000 shares in the space of a day.

Ms Sharkey, 24, said she has been overwhelmed with the response and wanted it to show women they do not have to give up their career to have children. Speaking to ABC News, she said: "It wasn't a statement [on breastfeeding] or anything like that.

"I would have sent the same picture to the uni had [Alek] had a bottle or a sandwich ... it was just the fact that I'm a mum, it's not I'm a breastfeeding mum, just I'm a mum. "It was really a message of thanks and that other mums can do it as well. "You don't have to give up the career to have kids and you don't have to give up kids to have the career ... you can have it all."

Both of her children Ari, 20 months old, and her newborn Alek were born throughout her three and a half years at university. The Australian mother's photo was shared on the University of Sunshine Coast's Facebook page. Ms Sharkey said her university had been supportive of her and other mothers during her time there and allowed her to take her sons to lectures.

She said: "Another tutor was really good with the pregnancy ... and was very supportive.  "They said just because you have kids doesn't mean you can't study. "It's really great other people are on the same page."
