Nigeria Para-Powerlifting team won one silver and three bronze medals at the 2015 IPC Powerlifting European Open Championships which came to an end on Saturday in Eger, Hungary. Nwosu Ndidi who won gold medal at the All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville won silver medal in Women’s 73kg to set pace for medal haul for the four athletes that represented the country at the championship. Ghazouani Souhad of France won gold, while XU Lili of People’s Republic of China settled for the bronze medal.
In the Men’s 80kg category, Taiwo Tolulope won bronze. GU Xiaofei of People’s Republic of China won gold while Hosseini Ali of Islamic Republic of Iran won the silver medal. Jegede Opeyemi won bronze in the Men’s 88kg category. People’s Republic of China’s YE Jixiong won the gold and KHALAF Mohammed Khamis of United Arab Emirates won the silver medal. Nigeria’s third bronze medal was won by Azu Virginia in the Women’s 67kg category. TAN Yujiao of Cina won gold while Rushia’s Berieva Kheda won the silver medal.
The National Coach of the Nigeria Para-Powerlifting Federation (NPPF), Are Feyisetan in a brief chat with SportingLife on Facebook, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance.
“I came here with only four athletes and all of them are going home with something. I am very proud of them and we are assuring Nigerians of better performance in our subsequent outings,” he told SportingLife.
A record 230 lifters from more than 40 countries are in Eger for the final regional Championships of 2015. An Americas Open Championships was held in Mexico City in April and an Asian Open in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in July. The competition is also a Paralympic ranking competition for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
