United Bank for Africa (UBA), a Nigerian multinational financial institution has launched contactless payment cards in Nigeria, becoming the first financial institution in Nigeria to introduce contactless cards.This much was made known through a tweet on UBA’s official twitter account on November 16, 2015.
The contactless payment cards uses the Near Field Communication (NFC) technology and looks like a regular debit/credit card.
It offers customers an easier, more convenient and hassle-free way to pay for goods and services – they don’t need to slot in or swipe their card.
To use the contactless cards, customers simply follow the steps below.
1. Ensure that the POS or ATM terminal can accept contactless payments (it must be NFC-enabled);
2. Simply hold the contactless card against the reader (remember…no slotting, no swiping);
3. Users will be prompted to enter their PIN (the CBN requires PIN entry for all card transactions on the POS);
4. Voila, the transaction is approved once the PIN is verified.
“With our contactless cards, you can make payments for everyday essentials and other things that money can buy the contactless way,” UBA stated on its website.
It added, “You can now stand out from the crowd by joining the contactless revolution. Move away from the norm and enter our contactless world of easy payments where you no longer have to insert or swipe your card.”
The contactless payment cards, which can also be used on regular POS terminals, uses the Combined Data Authentication EMV Chip – currently the highest standard for chip technology used in payment cards, to ensure transactions are absolutely safe.
Customers in Nigeria can get the contactless payment cards at any of UBA’s Business Offices in Nigeria for NGN1,000 in less than 24 hours – the cards will be launched in other African markets in the coming months.
What are you waiting for? Why not hurry to get your NFC-enabled contactless payment cards today and stand out from the crowd.
United Bank for Africa, founded in 1949 and headquartered in Lagos, has subsidiaries in 19 African countries, with representative offices in France, the United Kingdom and the United States, providing universal banking services to more than 7 million customers across 626 branches.
