As part of its initiative to connect one million women entrepreneurs to markets by 2020, the International Trade Centre (ITC) has announced the launch of SheTrades, a web and native app that will help women entrepreneurs from across the world to connect to markets and provide buyers across the globe a unique platform to connect with women-owned enterprises.
SheTrades is a tool for women entrepreneurs to address many gender-specific barriers to trade and brings together thousands of women-owned businesses to showcase their products in various sectors such as agriculture and information technology.
Through a series of customized filters, across the globe buyers can identify companies that meet their requirements.
“SheTrades is an innovative tool to facilitate our efforts to connect one million women entrepreneurs to markets by 2020. It facilitates new business opportunities and potential partnerships, and presents larger businesses with new sourcing possibilities,” ITC Director, Arancha Gonzalez said in a press release.
She added, “SheTrades tech platform offers an opportunity for women entrepreneurs to leverage 21st century technology offered by mobile phones and the Internet to reach out, find buyers, to internationalize and scale their businesses.”
SheTrades, developed by women entrepreneurs for women entrepreneurs, connects women-owned businesses with sourcing companies, including multinationals.
Additionally, SheTrades allows women-owned businesses to connect to markets and internationalize, and enables them to share information about their companies, products and services, and connect with buyers.
SheTrades was developed by Kenya-based ICT solutions provider, Greenbell Communications following their first place win at the 2015 WVEF Tech Challenge, a joint initiative of the ITC, Google and CI&T to develop a digital platform to support women entrepreneurs.
SheTrades is available as a free download on the Google Play Store.
SheTrades was launched by the ITC Director and Amina Mohamed, Cabinet Secretary of the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, at the International Forum on Women Business which took place from December 14-17, 2015 in Nairobi in conjunction with the World Trade Organization’s 10th Ministerial Conference.
The International Trade Centre, a joint agency of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations, assists small and medium-sized enterprises in developing and transition economies to become more competitive in global markets.
