Tess Stimson was terrified of having a daughter, concerned that she would inherit her looks. Her mother had promised valiantly throughout her childhood that she would 'grow into' her big nose, and that 'handsome' women kept their looks longer than pretty ones. All her life, Tess had swallowed the hurt of rejection and learnt to make up for her lack of looks by being smart. But it had been a painful learning curve, and one she didn't want any child of hers to have to follow. So when she found out she was expecting a daughter, she prayed she would inherit her husband's genes.
