Kenya Power Develops TBU For Its Fibre Optic Business


Following the issuance of a Network Facility Provider – Tier 2 License by the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), Kenya’s national electric utility company,Kenya Power has announced it has developed a telecommunications business unit (TBU) for its fibre optic business.

Kenya Power aims to deliver a complete line of telecommunications products to CCK-licensed application and content service providers.
This will enable the licensed serviced providers to meet their ever increasing bandwidth demand for voice, data and video.
Also, the extensive telecommunications network will provide inter-connection for Kenya to the entire Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) region and beyond.
Since the launch of its fibre optic business in early 2010, the Company has signed lease agreements with a number of telecommunications operators including Safaricom, Airtel, Liquid Telecom Ltd, Jamii Telecommunications, Indigo Telecommunication Ltd and Wananchi Telecom Ltd.
Kenya Power is currently offering dark fibre on 5, 15, and 20 years Indefeasible Rights of Use (IRU) at competitive market driven prices.
At the moment, several routes have already been completed, however the company’s target is to have more routes in service on a quarterly basis.
Kenya Power, founded in 1922 by a merger and headquartered in Nairobi, transmits, distributes and retails electricity to customers throughout Kenya.
