NO fewer than 2,000 youths across the 23 local government areas of Rivers State are currently undergoing training in how to access job opportunities online.
The state’s Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. PrincewillOgbobula, disclosed this while kicking off a two-day digital job-training project organised by the Federal Ministry of Communications in partnership with Rockefeller Foundation and the Rivers State Government in Port Harcourt.
Ogbobula said the workshop was aimed at getting youths in the state employable; adding that an effective ICT would encourage speedy development of the country.
He urged participants at the event to make proper use of the training to do business across borders, using the Internet.
Ogbobula explained that the ministry was prepared to provide the best 10 participants with the basic tools including computers, software, and how to access the net.
He further noted that the Department of Youth Enterprise and Development Promotion in the ministry would be deployed after the programmefor post-evaluation to monitor their performances.
In his opening remarks, the representative of the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology, Mr. Ekroro Macdonald, noted that the programme was to re-orientate the youths to see the need to get engaged in productive ventures rather than waiting for jobs that were not available.
Macdonald appraised the successes recorded from the training, observing that their agency had been able to train 25,000 youths across the federation against their target of 28,000 youths.
In his presentation, the facilitator from Rockefeller Foundation, Mr. Bayode Femi, identified requirements for getting online jobs as a functional email and Skype account, marketable/professional skills and an Internet-enabled computer/ smartphone.
Others, according to him, are a basic understanding of English language-both writing and speaking and a ready-to-work attitude.
