President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerians to make peace and love their watchwords, saying: “We will surely make faster progress, if we eschew all divisive, parochial, ethnic and religious sentiments and rivalries.”
In an Easter message he personally signed, the President re-iterated commitment towards ensuring that the 2016 budget passed recently by the National Assembly is implemented for the socio-economic uplift of all Nigerians.
Governor Akinwumi Ambode on his part said the season should serve as a reminder of the selflessness, love, sacrifice and tolerance of Jesus Christ throughout His earthly sojourn.
“We must see this period as a time to think about how we can each help steer our nation back on the road to prosperity, by working in the spirit of togetherness.”
He restated his commitment towards making life more comfortable for the people, assuring that the state government will intensify efforts on road projects, the ‘Light Up Lagos’ initiative, youth empowerment, healthcare services and public safety.
Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, called for prayers, sacrifice, cooperation and understanding from Nigerians, stressing that since Easter is a period of sober reflection, citizens should be more prayerful.
The governor pleaded with the people to ensure up to date payment of their taxes to enable government deliver dividends of democracy.
The governor noted that his administration has worked tirelessly to transform Ondo State since he assumed office, adding that he wouldn’t have been able to attain the achievements recorded without the goodwill of people of the state.
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State called on Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of forgiveness, selflessness and perseverance learnt during the 40 days of fasting and prayers, which mark the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In his Easter greetings, Governor Ibikunle Amosun advised Christians to provide selfless services to humanity, as Christ demonstrated through his death and resurrection. “When we show love and offer selfless service, our nation and indeed the world will be a better place for us all,” the governor said.
Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, said Easter provides a good background for Nigerians to rediscover themselves, adding that only total rebirth in national consciousness and values can deliver the country from its many challenges. He called on Nigerians to use the period to pray for the country to come out of its economic challenges.
Aregbesola, who described Easter as a period of sober reflection, enjoined people to live in peace and harmony at all times, adding that religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence among citizens are necessary elements in the sustenance of development.
Sending his felicitations on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff urged Nigerians to renew the bond of love, forgiveness and peaceful co-existence, irrespective of religious, ethnic and political persuasions.
The PDP chairman noted that devotion to national unity and harmony is key to overcoming the economic, social and security challenges confronting the nation.
Stressing that unity is the strongest source of strength; PDP urged collective determination to end bitterness, hostilities and divisions that keep the country apart through virtues of love, forgiveness and charity.
“We must all continue to see ourselves as brothers and sisters and work together towards fulfilling the mind of God who, in His infinite wisdom destined us to live together as a united and prosperous nation,” the party said.
Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Monday Igbuya, urged Nigerians to love more deeply, reminding them of hope and joy in the midst of despair.
While thanking Deltans at home and abroad for their prayers and support, Igbuya assured that the legislature would continue to partner with other arms of government in the delivery of good governance.
Also, leaders of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) advised Nigerians to promote peace and unity for the nation’s growth and development.
In a statement by the publicity secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim, ACF called on all citizens to demonstrate love, peaceful coexistence and commitment to the unity of the country.
