Midnight in London: Stunning black and white photos dating back to 1928 show Piccadilly Circus alive with early neon signs

Fascinating photographs dating back to 1928 showcase the flashing hotspot in its early days, with advertisements for Wrigley's and Gordon's Gin shining bright into the night.

Traffic reached a maelstrom in 1906 with the opening of the Piccadilly Circus tube station (bottom right), which was followed a few years later by the area's first electrically illuminated billboard promoting Perrier.

Despite just one building now featuring video screens today, Piccadilly Circus is one of the most iconic spots in the world and attracts nearly 72 million visitors each year.
