The calendar method is most reliable to calculate safe period for a woman with a regular period cycle. The first thing to note is the duration of the cycle.
For example, the first day of the last menstrual bleeding to the first day of the present menstrual bleeding is the duration of the menstrual cycle. It should also be noted that the duration varies from person to person and is usually between 26 to 31 days.
Ovulation is one part of the female menstrual cycle whereby a mature ovarian follicle discharges an egg. It is during this process that the egg travels down the fallopian tube where it may be met by a spe rm and become fertilized. Ovulation approximately occurs in the middle of the cycle. That is the duration of the cycle – (minus) 14 days, which also varies.
To calculate your safe period correctly to avoid unwanted pregnancy, you must know your safe period and your fertile period. To calculate fertile period: The shortest cycle minus 18 days=1st days of the fertile period. The longest cycle minus 10 days= last day of fertile period.
For Example: If a women’s menstrual cycle varies from 26 days to 31days cycle. The shortest cycle (26 days) minus18 days=8th day. The longest cycle (31days) minus 10 days=21st day. The 8th to the 21st day of each cycle counting from the first day of the menstrual period is considered as the fertile period.
The 8th to the 21st day of each cycle counting from the first day of the menstrual period is considered as the fertile period. Any period other than this fertile period in a menstrual cycle is considered as Safe Period.
But this may not exactly be correct for all women. It depends on the length of your menstrual cycle (it should be exactly a 28-day cycle or little less).
Note that the spe rm can be active only up to 3 to 5 days in the reproductive tract. And there will be a possibility to get pregnant if you have unprotected s3x five days before ovulation. The egg will also be active for 24 hours and it dies if the fertilization will not take place.
Here are simple steps to follow:
Use your calendar method to monitor your cycle for at least six months. Determine the shortest and longest menstrual cycles through observing your menstrual cycle. Note down your last period first date.
Days 1 to 7 of your menstrual period lasting from days 26 to 32 is known to be safe or infertile. Remember, ovulation occurs on 19th day and there are chances for fertilization till day 20 of the menstrual cycle.
This can fail occasionally but practising abstinence ensures that a girl won’t become pregnant because there is no opportunity for spe rm to fertilize an egg.
See your doctor for proper counselling if you have problems calculating the safe days after periods.
