Expanding the Panama Canal: Incredible pictures show how world's most famous waterway was transformed in $5.5bn project that features locks weighing 4,200 tonnes and using 4.4m cubic meters of concrete
The expansion includes two new sets of lock complexes, one on the Pacific coast on the outskirts of Panama City and one on the northern coast at Colon.
Photographer Tom Fowlks has spent four years documenting the ambitious feat. It means Panama to lure gargantuan liquified natural gas (LNG) tankers. Panama's plan is to triple the $1billion in revenue it currently gets from canal shipping fees. The main image is an aerial view of the new Agua Clara lock by the Atlantic Ocean. Inset is the passageway being built.
