Student, 16, nearly dies after developing toxic shock syndrome from using tampons
Katrina Shelton, from Michigan, was 16 when she contracted toxic shock syndrome which she initially thought as flu.
Her mother Jennifer (pictured with Miss Shelton on her final day in hospital, right) brought her home from school. She was rushed to hospital when the 'virus' became steadily worse and she felt weak, feverish and was repeatedly vomiting before collapsing on the bathroom floor. She spent days in intensive care (left) before being diagnosed with the bacterial infection, which she believes was caused by wearing tampons. Now 19, she has since graduated from school (inset) and refuses to wear tampons. She said: 'You see the warning labels on boxes of tampons, but you never think it's going to happen to you.'
