Amidst controversy about who is the real Starboy in the music world, Wizkidayo has promised to unload some new vibes for his fans.
“Just know I’m about to release some of the best works I’ve ever recorded!!”, he tweeted Tuesday, in reaction to a fan who said his fans have been starved for too long.
Twenty six year-old Wizkid who just ended shows in Pretoria, South Africa, followed by a performance with American Chris Brown in Mombasa Kenya, began the week on a controversy over who is the authentic Starboy of music.
The controversy came as Canadian Weeknd, released an album, Starboy, which is making waves with close to 60 million views on You Tube and number two on the Billboard. Many Nigerians felt Weeknd has committed identity theft, by using the Starboy name.
Weeknd, real name Abél Makkonen Tesfaye, is a Canadian singer-songwriter and record producer. In late 2010, Tesfaye anonymously uploaded several songs to YouTube under the name “The Weeknd”. This year, the 26 year old picked up two Grammy Awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best R&B Performance.
Blogger Jaguda.com, who summed up Nigerians reactions, says Wizkid has used the brand name ‘Starboy’ as his label name since he parted ways with EME in 2013, and always shouts it out in all his songs.
“In many ways, it’s become his trademark intro to any track he’s on. So you can understand why many Nigerian heads turned when they heard the title of The Weeknd’s album. I mean who cares if you have Grammys and international awards? We got that name first lol.”
Wizkid himself dabbled into the controversy with a tweet on Tuesday:
