Don urges increased investment in science, Tech Education

A former lecturer of physics at the University of Lagos, Prof. Henry Boyo, has advised the Federal Government to spare no expense in developing the country’s scientific and technological base, if she must keep pace with her counterparts.

Speaking at a science fair organised by Sterling Heights Children Foundation in Lagos State, Boyo expressed dissatisfaction with government’s attitude towards the development of science and technology.
According to him, “We have not yet imbibed science as our culture, but we only take it as a subject that we have to study in order to pass examination. Science is not just like literature or history, it describes a way of life, a way to interpret what happens, and we use the interpretation to be able to create new things. Our current state in this country lends credence to the fact that we still don’t understand what science is all about.”

Speaking further, he said that the first step to take, in order to get out of this condition is to fight against corruption. “Corruption has eaten deep into the fabric of this country, including education. When you give out money for research, it goes to the wrong hands, that is, people who are not competent. In fact if the money is there but the environment is wrong, you don’t get any result also.
