President Muhammadu Buhari
yesterday took back the mantle of leadership from Vice President Yemi Osinbajo,
who held the forth while he was on vacation for 50 days.
Revealing that he had handed over
to Buhari, Osinbajo said his meeting
with the president, which lasted well over an hour, centred on the economy,
budget and North East, among other national issues.
Osinbajo told State House
correspondents, when he emerged from the meeting with Buhari, that he briefed
the President on developments in the polity while he was away.
He said the President was pleased
with his performance while he was acting as president in his absence.
When asked how the president was
doing, the vice president said: “He is very well. We just had a very long
meeting, where I was basically trying to bring the president up to date as to
some of the things we have done while he
was away. And he has given a few directives on what we should be doing
on so many areas, the North East, budget, the economy and a wide range of
issues.”
Asked if the President was ready
for work, Osinbajo replied: “He held a meeting with me for over an hour, where
we discussed a wide range of issues; so his readiness for work is not in doubt
at all. In fact, he has been over ready.”
On if Buhari was impressed with the
way he handled the country while he was away, Osinbajo said: “I think the
president was reasonably satisfied.”
In a related development, President
Buhari has resumed work. He arrived office at about 11:30am yesterday.
The two Buhari’s media aides, Femi
Adesina and Garba Shehu, walked to the residence at about 10:30am to meet with
the President. The Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, who went directly
to the president’s office, came thereafter.
Emerging from the President’s
office, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, told State
House correspondents that the letter notufying the National Assembly of
Buhari’s resumption was ready. He held up the white envelope calling it the
“Golden Fleece.”
The Senior Special Assistant on
National Assembly matters (Senate), Ita Enang, was also seen heading to the
president’s office to collect the original copy of the letter for transmission.
n a meeting after resumption,
Buhari said he deliberately decided to arrive on a weekend to allow Osinbajo
continue with his work, while he rested some more.
“I deliberately came back towards
the weekend, so that the Vice President will continue and I will continue to
rest,” he said.
His media handlers had immediately
taken to their twitter handles, stating that he was taken out of context. They
explained that the President said it jokingly and clarified that he would be
transmitting a letter to the National Assembly yesterday.
“PMB will Monday transmit a letter
to National Assembly on his return to the country. That makes his return to
work formal, and constitutional,” Adesina said on his twitter handle last
Friday.
