Drunk fish are just like tanked up humans - but their hangovers are even WORSE

Scientists from NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering's Dynamical Systems Laboratory wanted to see what happened when zebrafish overindulged, so put them in a container of booze and let them swim about for a bit. Once the fish had gotten nice and sozzled, they were returned to ordinary water to swim alongside their sober mates. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the drunken sea dwellers immediately started acting as you'd expect: swimming faster and more recklessly than more sensible fish. The alcohol-exposed animals were also more likely to veer off in strangely, exhibiting more leadership than usual and dragging their mates off in whatever direction they wanted to go in. However, too much booze ruined this sense of leadership, because the fish became too unsteady on their fins to guide their friends around. Zebrafish are known to be big drinkers, at least during scientific experiments. A previous study exposed their eggs to alcohol to find early exposure made the fish grow up anti-social and less intelligent. So what about a zebrafish's hangover? "They get back to complete normalcy after a day or so," the team said, according to The Independent. Generally, humans will sober up well before that - and be thinking about their next ill-advised night out.
