Nim$, a Kenyan startup using mobile money to enable fast and secure payments has won the 2015 edition of Startup Istanbul, a leading startup event which brings together founders, investors and executives in the region.
On the first and second day of the 5 days event, over 100 startups selected from 40 different countries took part in pitching, training and mentorship sessions in preparation for the next phase.
The next phase saw 50 startups pitch to a jury consisting of big names from Silicon Valley such as Steve Blank, after which 15 startups were selected for the next phase.
Against all odds, Nim$ emerged winner after pitching in the finals alongside Indonesian startup, iGrow and Iranian startup, Taskulu, which placed second and third respectively.
Other African startups that made it to the finals of the event include Mytoddlr from Nigeria and Expensya from Tunisia.
The event had in attendance speakers from all walks of life, companies such as Microsoft, Samsung and Intel, and several investors.
Startup Istanbul 2015 was organized by Etohum, a leading startup accelerator and seed investor in Turkey and sponsored by several companies.
