Opposition Party Advises The New INEC Chairman

The Democratic People’s Congress (DPC) on Friday, October 23, applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for naming Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party in a statement by its national chairman, Olusegun Peters congratulated Yakubu, saying INEC needed a leader with impeccable character devoid of controversy and partisanship, NAN reports.
The party asked the newly appointed INEC boss to build on the foundation laid by Prof. Attahiru Jega in the 2015 general election which was adjudged to be free, fair and acceptable.
Peters advised him to ensure the supply of adequate and quality card readers for future elections, particularly in the forthcoming Kogi and Bayelsa governorship elections.
He noted that Nigerians would not tolerate any rigging in the upcoming elections.
The task ahead of INEC is enormous. It is time to retrain its personnel for effective service delivery,” the DPC chairman said.
Peters also called on the commission to provide a level playing field for political parties in its activities, programmes and elections, noting that this was the only way to strengthen Nigeria’s “frail democracy.”
President Buhari on Wednesday, October 21, named Yakubu as the national chairman of the INEC. He is a professor of political history and international studies, and was the executive secretary of the tertiary education trust fund.
On Thursday, Buhari sent a letter to the Nigerian Senate, seeking confirmation of the appointment of chairman of the commission and its commissioners.
