Solar-Powered Mobile Charging Startup, Juabar Wins Seedstars Dar Es Salaam


Juabar Tanzania Limited, a solar-powered mobile charging startup has won the Tanzanian leg of the Seedstars World Startup Competition that took place on November 5, 2015 at Buni Innovation hub located in the Tanzania Commission of Science and Technology Building.
Eleven startups – Tickets, Tango TV, Mbezi Recycling, Lemon, Juabar, Kaliko, Guumzo, Agrinfo, East Africa Fruit Farms & Co and Edu-Taarifa, pitched on the night of the finals but Juabar Tanzania Limited impressed the multinational and brilliant jury with its offering.
Juabar Tanzania Limited manufactures Juabar, a high quality 50W solar-PV system for use in rural Tanzania that can charge either 10 or 20 phones or a variation of other small electronic devices at once.
Placing second on the night was Mbezi Recycling, a plastic recycling project in Tanzania while mobile, web and TV streaming service for local content, Tango TV came third.
Juabar Tanzania Limited will represent Tanzania at the global finals of the startup competition in Geneva, Switzerland next year where it will compete with other regional winners from across the world for US$1.5million in investment.
The event was organized by Buni Innovation hub in partnership with Stanbic Bank Tanzania and supported by Nefrids Africa, Tranzict, Lake fm, UNDP and a host of others.
The next leg of Seedstars World startup competition will be held in Dakar, Senegal on 17 November, 2015.
This year, Switzerland-based Seedstars World will travel to 52 countries across the world, promoting and investing in startups through its startup competition.
