Friesland Restates Commitment Towards Reduction of Malnutrition


Following government's resolve to improve healthy life of Nigerian children, the management of Friesland's Campina, makers of Peak milk has restated its commitment toward lending support in the battle against malnutrition. Speaking at a press briefing to herald the launch of the new offerings of Peak Milk and Three Crown Milk in Lagos recently, the Managing Director of the company, Rahul Colaco said the introduction of low unit portion packs of the two products is a response to concerns associated with high level of malnutrition among children which is being addressed by making diary nutrition more accessible and affordable to Nigerians.

According to Colaco, with the price of the two products ranging from N10 to N15, more Nigerians including the poor will be brought on board to get nourished. 
"It is not just to say diary product is enough for you but to make it affordable without compromising quality," he stated.
Colaco, who expressed his worry on the increasing number of children being lost as a result of malnutrition, explained that the company was ready to contribute its quota in reducing malnutrition related death through the provision of low priced dairy products that are affordable to Nigerians. A Professor of Community Health Nutrition and Nutrition Consultant, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ebenezer Ojefitimi who spoke on the significance of nutrition disclosed that malnutrition was indeed a major problem which have caused damage not only to children but adults. The university lecturer, who discussed on the topic titled "The Role of Diary in Promoting Nutrition: A Public Health Perspective," however commended the role of the company in securing the lives of the children by making milk more affordable. He equally called on government at both state and federal levels to formulate policy that will ensure that diary consumption become the integral part of women during pregnancy and children in school. According to the consultant, the absence of diary milk in the system may have resulted into physical limitations and low intellectual capacity among many Nigerians, some of which include poor judgment of drivers on the highway causing needless death. Colaco restated that despite the various offerings of these products, it is still being fortified with additional vitamins and minerals. "We are introducing these products to strengthen the portfolios of our relevant dairy products in the market. I really believe it will appeal to every segment of the market," he added.
