Charlotte, a patrol horse with the Houston Police Department for the last four years, was hit by a cement truck and killed on December 3, but her rider, Officer D. Herrejon, refused to leave her side. The department shared a heart-wrenching photo of Charlotte's final moments, being comforted by her humn companion as she died on the sidewalk (main). Officials say the horse (pictured left with Officer Herrejon) became spooked by the traffic and walked out in front of the truck. The driver is not believed to be at fault. 'She loved her job and was always ready to go to work putting bad guys in jail or giving nuzzles to children. She will be missed,' the department said.
