These remarkable comparison pictures show the difference 24 hours made to the flooded streets of Cumbria and Lancashire which were hit by record rainfall brought by Storm Desmond. Over the weekend, homeowners in some of the worst hit areas including Carlisle and Cockermouth had to be evacuated from their properties as floodwater rose to waist-height. Army personnel, firefighters and mountain rescue teams could be seen carrying residents through the muddy rising waters or escorting them via boat as they helped them to safety. Floodwater lapped the doors of shops and homes, while living rooms and kitchens were left decimated by the 'unprecedented' scenes. However, today - just 24 hours after water ran like a river through the streets - the rising water had finally drained away, leaving in its wake scenes of devastation and destruction.
