The boxing talent hunt, GOtv Boxing NextGen Search, comes to an end today at the Old Skool Restaurant, National Stadium, Lagos, with a sport/medical seminar and free medical examination for boxers in the professional cadre. The event, organised to discover skillful young boxers, opened at the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame Gym on 17 February.
The first two days of the event were devoted to sparring sessions by over a hundred aspiring professional boxers from around the country, who were assessed by a five-member panel of judges led by distinguished boxing coach, Mr. Joe Mensah.
At the end of the sparring sessions, 26 new stars were selected and will participate in today’s seminar.
The lucky boxers will also have their professional boxing licences paid for by the sponsors, GOtv.
Head of the judges’ panel, Mensah, thanked the sponsors, noting that the GOtv Boxing NextGen Search has shown that Nigeria has talented young boxers who, with encouragement and guidance, can rule the world.
“What this has shown is that we have potentially great boxers in the country. I have been impressed by two boys, one 19 and the other 20, who paid their way from Anambra State, to participate at the search.
It is my belief that with the support of the sponsors, this country stands a very good chance of producing very competent and outstanding boxers in the nearest future. Boxing is back on its feet and we are happy,” he said.
The seminar scheduled to wind up the event will be addressed by Dr. S Bolorunduro, a retired army colonel and Consultant Anaethologist/Medical Director, Talent Hospital, Lagos; Dr. Moses Ani, Medical Director, Hovas Place Hospital, Lagos; and Dr. A Essien, Medical Director, Fountain of Grace Hospital, Lagos. The facilitator will be Dr. Chike Ilukwe, Vice President (South East) Nigerian Boxing Board of Control.
Topics lined up for discussion are drug abuse in boxers, fitness and nutrition.
