Manchester City have one foot in the quarter final of the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League season as they won a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Dynamo Kyiv in Kiev on Wednesday.
Two goals in the first half from Sergio Aguero and David Silva and a curler from Yaya Toure was all Man City needed to prevail.
Dynamo Kiev have been on winter break since November, and were breathing hard by the time the first half concluded as City’s better physical condition showed.
The first goal came in the 15th minute through Aguero who latched unto a knock down from Toure in the box and his volley had the beating of Olexandr Shovkovskiy. This was after a bright start from the English side, for whom Manuel Pellegrini had chosen to rest most of his main players in last weekend’s FA Cup loss to Chelsea.
The second goal came after a purring move from Aguero and Raheem Sterling, whose low cross was connected by Silva.
That was five minutes from the end of the first half.
The second half saw a stronger Dynamo, with a change during the half time break. Junior Moraes came on for the Polish striker, Lukasz Teodorczyk, who had been largely ineffectual in the first half.
But the home side, backed by a vociferous crowd were back in the game on 59 minutes when Vitaly Buyalsky’s shot took a deflection from Nicolas Otamendi – a deflection which took the ball past Joe Hart.
Kiev lost Aparecido Danilo Silva to a hamstring in the 66th minute. The whole stadium thought they had the equalizer in the 79th minute when Buyalsky’s goal-bound low shot was expertly saved by Hart.
Toure should have scored with seven minutes on the clock but he missed his header from close range but he made up for that miss with a superb curler to seal a comfortable win.
Kelechi Iheanacho got his first ever minutes in the Champions League as he came on for Aguero as City ran doen the clock.
In the second match of the day, Atletico Madrid could not break through the resistance of PSV Eindhoven, who had Gaston Pereiro sent off in the 68th
