Real Madrid held off a first-half scare to beat Athletic Club and keep up their chase of Barcelona.
Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo (twice), James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos were enough to hand the hosts all three points at the Bernabeu.
But it wasn't a result without its frights, as Athletic equalised thanks to a shocking error from Raphael Varane - who would later be sent off - before putting serious pressure on Zinedine Zidane's men.
It was James Rodriguez who conjured a moment of magic from nothing to put them in front again, drilling home from 25 yards.
And Toni Kroos' swivel and strike on the half-time whistle was enough for the victory to be virtually assured.
Ronaldo grabbed a late second before Gorka Elustondo headed home a consolation goal at the end.
