Louis Van Gaal was plunged deeper into crisis as relegation threatened Sunderland clinched the win.
Lamine Kone squeezed home a great header in the 82 minute, with the help of David De Gea and Anthony Martial, to revive their hopes of avoiding relegation. United were, once again, a disappointment.
It was Sunderland's first win over Man United at home since 1997. Wabhi Khazri gave Sunderland the lead after three minutes but Anthony Martial levelled.
Then Kone struck after Sunderland were the better team in the second half. United needed a win, but the defeat leaves them six points adrift of Manchester City who are in fourth.
