There were over 46,000 submissions from photographers in 168 countries, but the organizers behind the annual Smithsonian photo contest have whittled those down to 70 finalists.
From pelicans fighting over lunch in Greence (top left) to an Ethopian shepherd searching for water in a drought (top right) and two tiger cubs play fighting in India (bottom right), all the photos manage to evoke a sense of wonder. Winners will be announced on March 22.
