Brussels is under attack today after a series of bombings in the Belgian capital. At 8am local time there were two explosions close to the American Airlines check-in desk in the city's packed airport (right).
At least 13 were killed and 35 injured (top right) as at least one suicide bomber detonated two devices. Firemen at the scene are said to have discovered a third unexploded suicide belt in the rubble.
Just 79 minutes later, at 9.19am, a new explosion destroyed a train at Maelbeek Metro station in the centre of Brussels where 15 are dead and 55 gravely injured.
Belgian media have said the left-hand picture shows the mangled train damaged by the large bomb. Maelbeek is the gateway to the EU Quarter of the city, yards from its main institutions, and shocking images in the aftermath of the explosion shows the pavement outside was littered with injured commuters (top left).
Citizens are being warned to stay at home as the Belgian government raised its security level to 'maximum' and sent hundreds more armed soldiers onto the streets.
