Chelsea forward Diego Costa (pictured, in white) squared up to Everton's Gareth Barry (in blue) in their FA Cup quarter final defeat at Goodison Park, Merseyside, tonight.
The men went nose to nose before Costa, who was already on a yellow card, leaned over and bit Barry's neck (centre).
In what appeared to be an attempt to avoid punishment, Costa then threw his arms around the Everton midfielder in a friendly embrace but he did not fool referee Michael Oliver who presented him with a second yellow - and a subsequent red card - in the 84th minute.
Since signing for Chelsea for a reported £32million in 2014, Costa has been involved in a string of controversies, receiving a number of violent conduct charges from the English Football Association.
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was given a ten game ban for biting a Chelsea player in April 2013.
