WaterAid, an international organisation says it has budgeted one billion naira on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) projects in Nigeria in 2016.
The Country Representative of the organisation, Dr Michael Ojo, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.
According to Ojo, the projects to be executed are intended to address the water, sanitation, and hygiene issues in the country.
“WaterAid will properly spend about a billion naira this year and when you compare that to what government is spending, that is one over forty.
“The point I am trying to make there is, our investment in the sector is a fraction of what government actually brings or should bring; the government investment is lower than it should be.
“So if government was spending at the right level, they will be putting in the same amount of money put in for example towards health or education, hundreds of billions.
“So, we bring a small amount of money, and what that money is really intended to do – for example this year – is to show how best to ensure that services get to those who are most in need
“So our focus is always on how we get to the most vulnerable people in our society with the right types of service delivery options that really respond to their need.
“And so we‘ve been doing that work in the six states across the country; we work in Jigawa, Bauchi, Plateau, Benue, Enugu, and Ekiti states.
“And we will be tackling the issues around water sanitation and hygiene.’’
According to him, WaterAid is focusing on how best to address some of the sanitation issues in Nigeria considering the seriousness of the problem.
Ojo further said that as an international organisation, WaterAid was committed to rendering its services to the country in line with its mandate to reach out to countries with WASH challenges.(NAN)
