Former Super Eagles coach, Amodu Shuaibu, dies at 58

Former Super Eagles coach and current technical director of Nigeria Football Federation, Amodu Shuaibu has died, the Federation said on Saturday. He was 58 years old.

The four-time coach of the Super Eagles died in his sleep after complaining of chest pain on Friday night.
His death came less than a week after another former Eagles’ coach, Stephen Keshi died in Benin city.
Amodu, who qualified Nigeria to two World Cups, in 2002 and 2010, was to have replaced Sunday Oliseh, as the new Super Eagles coach but declined due to health issues.

He was recently appointed as Nigeria technical director of Nigeria football federation.

Some football officials said that Amodu was hypertensive and had been on medications.

Late keshi also assisted Amodu when Nigeria qualified for 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Amodu became popular when he coached BCC Lions of Gboko and won the African Cup in 1991. He was appointed as the Super Eagles’ coach in 1994.

He was re-appointed as the manager of the Super Eagles in October 2014, replacing Stephen Keshi. Keshi returned to the role two weeks later but was fired in July 2015 and Amodu took over coaching the team temporarily.
He handed over the Eagles to Sunday Oliseh to coach on a permanent basis later that month.

Amodu, played as a striker for Dumez and Niger Tornadoes but his playing career ended after he broke his leg.
He managed a number of club sides in Nigeria, such as BCC Lions, El-Kanemi Warriors, and Shooting Stars; he also managed Orlando Pirates in South Africa between 1996 and 1997.
