Gipsies keep their horses (and themselves) cool in the river at the hottest and busiest day of Appleby Fair
Appleby, held in the Westmorland area of Cumbria, is the biggest gipsy gathering in Europe - attracting 30,000 visitors from across Britain and the continent each year.
The festival is a celebration of the community's love of horses and is an opportunity for people to buy and sell the animals as well as parade them through the streets of the village. Today riders splashed out in the river, as temperatures reached the mid 20s, with young and old jumping on their beloved pets and launching themselves across the water.
