• To host telecoms corporate governance forum
Less than 14 days after, it was adjudged as the Regulator of the year, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) at the weekend won the European Award for Best Practices 2016.

The award ceremony, which held in Brussels, Belgium was hosted by the European Society for Quality Research (ESQR), an affiliate of the European Union (EU).
Meanwhile, the commission has concluded plans to host on June 21, the Code of Corporate Governance Forum for the Telecommunications Sector. The event will hold at Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Ikeja, Lagos, by 9.00 am.
At Belgium, no fewer than 63 countries participated in the award ceremony out of which the NCC won the European Award for Best Practices 2016. The award which is the Gold category is “in recognition of its outstanding commitment, support and results in quality management strategies” in the Gold category.
The award was received by the Director Public Affairs, NCC, Tony Ojobo, on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta.
The NCC’s management style, impact on the community that it serves and the professional way it carries out its regulatory activities in supervising a sector that contributes immensely to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria were some of the considerations for the award.
The organisers referred to investors’ confidence in the Nigerian Telecommunications sector as a result of the transparent regulatory activities of the NCC.
Only recently, the telecommunication sector contributed 0.5 per cent to the GDP despite the negative growth rate recorded by the economy in the first quarter of 2016. Indeed the sector’s contribution stood at 5.00 per cent up from the 3.49 percent it recorded first quarter 2015.
The European Award for Best Practice 2016 convention in Brussels, Belgium gave awards to selected organisations, Public administrations and companies from Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and Australia in recognition of their outstanding commitment and results in quality management strategies.
