Paralysed by flu: How a post-viral illness took months off Jules' life
Londoner Jules Turner slowly lost all sensation in his arms and legs shortly after having the flu.
Days later, he could no longer stand unaided and was rushed to A&E at Queen Elisabeth Hospital. Jules had developed Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a disorder where the body's antibodies attack the myelin, the fatty casing around the peripheral nerves (all the nerves apart from those in the brain and spinal cord); this causes damage and muscle weakness.
