Mary J. Blige has filed for divorce from her husband/manager, Martin ‘Kendu’ Isaacs, TMZ reports.
According to the media house, the singer is seeking for dissolution on grounds of irreconcilable differences, and she stated the date of their separation as ‘to be determined’.
The couple got married in 2003 and do not have any children together. While it still remains unclear why she is pulling the plug on their union, the Grammy award-winning singer has also asked the court to deny her husband spousal support. It is however not clear if they had a prenup.
In her 2014 interview with Stella Magazine, the singer noted that it was challenging to be married to her manager. “He always has my back. He’s going to fight to the death for Mary J. Blige. The downside is that there’s no separation; it’s on all the time,” she reportedly said.
“When you don’t feel like answering to your manager, he’s still your husband. If one of you doesn’t want to talk about something right now, you have to respect that. And you have to respect each other’s space,” said the singer who banned her husband from having female friends.
“All females for me, all guys for him. There’s none of that, ‘Oh, that’s my female friend. Oh, that’s my guy friend.’ No. Not in a marriage, I’ve never seen that work,” she had said.
The duo are yet to speak up since the news of divorce broke.
