The National treasurer, Alhaji Nasiru Umar, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), has commended the Federal Government for the planned recruitment of 500,000 teachers nationwide.
Umar made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.
He said that the recruitment of the teachers would address the problems of inadequate manpower in the education sector and promote teaching and learning.
Umar stressed the need for merit and to recruit those with professional teaching qualifications.
He also appealed to the government to devise means of deducting the salaries of primary schools’ teachers from the source, adding that it would ensure prompt payment of salaries.
Umar decried the recent disagreement between the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Teachers Institute (NTI), over degree and post-graduate programmes of the NTI.
He said that the NUT recognised all programmes of NTI as thousands of teachers were beneficiaries of the institute’s programmes.
