Britain's quest for a first gold goes on: Tour de France champ Chris Froome fails to win the road race as fellow Team GB rider Geraint Thomas crashes into a ditch

Chris Froome (left, with his head in his hands, and top right, in the front row without sunglasses) has failed to win a medal in the men's Olympic road race after starting among the favourites.

Tour de France winner Froome was three minutes behind the winner Greg Van Avermaet, from Belgium, who stole the victory from Dane Jakob Fuglsang and Pole Rafal Majka in a last-gasp sprint to the line. Welshman Geraint Thomas (bottom right) was among those closing in on the frontrunners but crashed into a ditch in the closing stages. He got back in the saddle and made it to the finish but was clearly injured. Froome - who has never won a one-day race - put in a valiant performance over the 237.5km (147miles) course through woodland outside Rio de Janeiro, but was unable to rein in the leaders. Fans were out in force for the first day of the Olympic Games in Rio, with thousands flocking to arenas, swimming pools, waterfronts and roads in the Brazilian city for a tantalising day of sport. As well as the cycling, other events including archery, handball, rowing and water polo got the ball rolling for the tournament.
