From fresh-faced idealists to battle-scarred and world-weary leaders: Oh how power has changed the Mays, Camerons, Clintons and Obamas as they endured the stresses of ruling

Both shaggy-haired, it's a rather hippy Hill and Bill pictured at Yale Law School (pictured, top left), where they met in 1970. Today, white-haired Bill, 69, cuts a much frailer figure, while Hillary cannot disguise her weariness as she campaigns to be president at 68 (inset).

This photo of David and Samantha Cameron (top right), taken in 1995, shows them as a well-heeled young couple with predictably conservative tastes. Today, though both are far more buffed by consultants, one and a half terms at No 10 have taken their strain (inset). In this Christmas photo taken after their marriage in 1992 (bottom left) Barack is typically relaxed in a pullover and short-sleeved shirt, while Michelle is the spit of her teenage daughters now. Today, the First Lady can still show off those famously toned upper arms. But the President, in particular, is much more grizzled compared to his arrival in the White House eight years ago (inset). Sitting next to each other at a debating society meeting in 1978, Oxford students Theresa Brasier and Philip May were already university sweethearts (bottom right).
