Kangpe, a health platform that wants to put a Doctor in the
pocket of every African, has wonSeedstars Lagos, the Nigerian leg of Seedstars
World, the global seed-stage startup competition for emerging markets and
fast-growing startup scenes.
Following calls for applications, Kangpe and seven other
startups were selected to pitch at the event from over 100 startups that
applied.
On the day of the event proper (August 11, 2016), all the
startups pitched – they had 5 mins to do so and 5 mins to answer questions – in
front of a prestigious jury for a chance to come out tops.
During its pitch, the Dr Femi Kuti founded Kangpe revealed it
had generated US$10,000 in revenue since launch, and now seeks US$1 million to
expand across Francophone Africa.
After deliberations and heated discussions, the jury, which
included Simeon Ononobi, Benjamin Benaim, Juliet Nwanguma & Tidjane Deme,
picked Kangpe as the winner of the contest.
Aside being crowned the most promising seed-stage startup of
Seedstars Lagos 2016, Kangpe booked a place at Seedstars Summit, which takes
place in Switzerland in March 2017.
The Summit is a weeklong training program with the
opportunity to meet the other winners from across the world, as well as
investors and mentors.
The final day of the Summit will see all the startups pitch
in front of an audience of 1,000 attendees with the possibility of winning up
to the US$1 million equity investment.
In second place was tutoring platform, Tuteria while
Davtonlearn, an online/cloud based video learning startup, came third.
The event took place at Seedspace Lagos. It was filled with
disruptive tech, inspirational discussions and networking sessions as promised.
Omidyar Network, Seedspace, the Swiss Embassy, Orange, PayU,
The Jacobs Foundation and others were supporters of the event.
Now that Seedstars Lagos is out of the way, Seedstars World
will continue its tour of the continent in search of smart startups that solve
regional issues and/or develop profitable products for the global market. Its next
stop is Accra, Ghana.
