Flooded communities appeal to Niger government for assistance

The Kamanda people have appealed to the Niger State government and other relevant agencies to urgently speed up the resettlement plans for Kolu and other communities in the Lapai local government area affected by flood disasters.

President of the National Kakanda Development Association, Alhaji Ismaila Ayuba Abdullahi, who made the call in an interview said the communities have suffered untold hardship as a result of persistent flood disasters in the last seven years.

“The unfortunate situation started since the construction of Kanji, Jebba and Shiroro Hydro Power Dams which usually overflow downstream as a result of heavy rainfall that had left the communities with losses of unimaginable magnitude,” he said.

Abdullahi emphasized that the communities have been affected in several ways which include loss of lives, farmlands, crops and animals while the floods also washed away many houses, schools, worship buildings as well as the maternal health centre.

He called for the construction of permanent Muye market, posting of personnel to Primary Health Care Hospital and science teachers to the secondary school in the area.
