Institute of Information Management (IIM-Africa) has disclosed plans to engage various stakeholders to support the successful implementation of the national economic recovery and growth program recently released by the Federal Government of Nigeria during the 2017 annual lecture, induction & award ceremony in Lagos.
The event is also expected to recognize and honour different stakeholders, including past and present public office holders, captains of industries including leaders in different sectors of the economy.
Speaking on lecture theme, Dr. Oyedokun Oyewole, president and chairman board of directors/governing council at IIM – Africa, said that the event is aimed at highlighting the role of Information Management in supporting and ensuring adequate implementation of the recently released Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) by the Federal Government of Nigeria, which is expected to lead to the growth of the nation’s economy by 2.19 percent in 2017 and 7 percent by the end of the planned period in 2020.
“The conference is not only timely but also essential at this point in time for a sustainable and competitive economy and economic transformation with emphasis on improving both public and private sector efficiency, which can only be guaranteed by ensuring proper management and access to information.
“In addition, successful implementation of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan will grossly depend and thrive only on timely, accurate and strategically relevant information. There would be need for private and public sectors to embrace information management and analytics to improve productivity and enable innovation,” Dr Oyewole said.
He said that there is a tremendous economic potential that can be unlocked by using the increasing volumes and diversity of real-time information to make better decisions in a wide variety of sectors, from healthcare to manufacturing to retail to public administration as the economic recovery and growth plan seek to give attention to macroeconomic stability; economic growth and diversification; competitiveness and business environment; governance and security.
“Promoting access to information in government and other institutions will play a vital role in maximizing the proceeds of the economic recovery and growth plan. It will enables government agencies and third parties to create innovative products and services using datasets and their outcomes, that are generated in the course of providing public services or conducting research.
“Some of the key motivations for information management initiatives are to promote transparency of decision-making, create accountability for elected and appointed officials, and spur greater citizen engagement. In addition, however, it is increasingly clear that information management can also enable the creation of economic value beyond the walls of the governments and institutions that promote access to their information. This information can not only be used to help increase the productivity of existing institutions, it also can impel the creation of entrepreneurial businesses and improve the welfare of individual citizens,” he said.
The conference theme is “Information Management: A Strategic Tool for Economic Recovery & Growth”, and special guests invited for paper presentation at the conference are key ministers from different strategic ministries in Nigeria.
They include, the minister of power, works & housing, Babatunde Fashola, (Special guest speaker); minister of finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun; minister, budget and national planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma; minister of industry, trade & investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah; minister of solid minerals Dr. John Fayemi Kayode; and the minister of labour & employment, Senator (Dr.) Chris Nwabueze Ngige.
