It wasn’t quite the exhilarating riposte to critics that Jose Mourinho might have imagined. Then again, his rallying cry on Friday had hardly been Shakespearian, unless Agincourt was actually preceded by Henry V telling the troops that their record in France had been previously been awful thus far so they shouldn’t really expect too much.
Few armies march eagerly into battle having been reminded of their limitations so perhaps it was significant that two of the players Mourinho had praised in his 12-minute monologue came to his rescue on Saturday.
