MTN Group, a Johannesburg-based multinational telecommunication
company has announced it plans to launch fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) in La Lucia,
an affluent suburb in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
The fibre-to-the-home project, which will deliver Internet speeds
of up to 100 Mbps, will connect about 439 homes to MTN’s high speed fibre
network before the end of October when the project reaches its completion date.
Civil works began in La Lucia on 20 July 2015 and at the moment,
three kilometres of trenching has already been completed, with about 18
kilometres left.
The launch is part of a planned upgrade of MTN’s network in
KwaZulu-Natal, which will gulp a whopping R1.2 billion.
MTN also announced that civil works has begun as it plans to
deploy FTTH in Fresnaye and Bakoven in the Western Cape and about 1,000 homes
are expected to be connected to MTN’s high speed fibre before the year runs
out.
Once
the high speed fibre-to-the-home project is completed in La Lucia, it would be
MTN’s first deployment of FTTH in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and an
extension of its FTTH footprint outside of Gauteng and Western Cape in South
Africa.
