SWAGEN Wins 2015 ONE Africa Award


Support for Women in Agriculture and Environment (SWAGEN) of Uganda has been declared winner of the 2015 ONE Africa Award at a ceremony held at the Accra International Conference Centre in Ghana on November 20, 2015 as part of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Annual Governance Weekend.
The US$100,000 award recognizes, rewards and advances the exceptional organizations founded by Africans and based in Africa that are dedicated to helping Africa achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
SWAGEN, founded in 1992 by a group of women from forest-dependent community in Rwoho Natural Tropical Forest, reached a Collaborative Forest Management (CFM) agreement with the Ugandan government through its advocacy activities and negotiations.
To emerge winner of the award, SWAGEN competed with Africa! Ignite of South Africa; Community Link of Uganda, and Global Shea Alliance of Ghana.
Through ONE Africa Award, the One Campaign has for the last seven years recognized and promoted innovative work of Africa-driven and Africa-led advocacy efforts of civil society organizations making significant progress towards the achievement of the MDGs.
ONE Africa Award is the brainchild of ONE, a campaign and advocacy organization of more than 3.5 million people taking action to end extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa.
