Scientists have discovered the first direct evidence that a chemical, produced by algae in freshwater all over the UK, might be linked to a range of devastating neurological conditions, such as Alzheimer's and Motor Neurone Disease.
The toxin - sometimes a by-product of increasingly common blue-green algal bloom - has been found in seafood and plants, through which it is feared it enters the food chain. If the link is confirmed, the chemical would be the first major environmental factor linked to increasing rates of Alzheimer's, which is predicted to affect more than one million Britons by 2050.
